In the end, Krakauer decides that a sense of individualism is important as long as the individual knows, and stays within, their limits to survive
ReplyDeleteIn Jon Krakauer's "Into the Wild", the main protagonist, Chris Mcandless, desires a lifestyle in which he can solely be an individual. However, no matter how much one strives to be fully self-dependent and closed off from the real world, one will come across others throughout his life who have been affected by him,(whether positively or negatively), and that affect stays with them, so one cannot strive to ever be solely individual.

ReplyDeleteThrough McCandless's resistance to authority and his attraction to the wilderness, Krakauer presents the argument that an individual challenges society and social norms in an attempt to attain true freedom.

ReplyDeleteMortenson demonstrates the impact a single person can have on others, fueled by individualism and prompted by his gut instinct. He does so in his effort to care for his sister, honor her by traveling to Pakistan in the monumental task to climb K2, and as he becomes impassioned by the Pakistani people.
ReplyDeleteKrakauer's message in Into The Wild is that individualism can be dangerous if taken to it's extremes because of the protagonist's loss in family connections, stubbornness to accept reality, and arrogance in the lack of preparing for the outdoors.
